Surrogacy statistics have been difficult to track, as they are not kept nationally. The numbers from local commercial surrogacy agencies and individual surrogate doctor's practices still give infertile couples looking into finding a surrogate mother reason for hope. As the number of surrogate pregnancy births has increased in the last 30 years, so too has the success rate. While some legal surrogacy issues remain. The possibility of a problem is actually less than one per cent. Surrogacy statistics on children born by surrogate motherhood is now close to 30,000 in total and growing due to increased society acceptance of the procedure. Amazingly, the number of in vitro fertilization successful babies is over a million!
Surrogacy Statistics on Fertility Information
Source: CDC Centers for Disease Control and Preservation
- Number of women ages 15-44 with impaired fecundity (impaired ability to have children): 7.3 million
- the percent of women ages 15-44 with impaired fecundity is 11.8%
- Number of married women ages 15-44 that are infertile (unable to get pregnant for a least 12 consecutive months): 2.1 million
- Percent of married women ages 15-44 that are infertile: 7.4%
- Number of women ages 15-44 who have ever used fertility services 7.3 million.
- 480 fertility clinics in the US
- 1,700 reproductive endocrinologists
- Women 35 + years only have a 6% chance conceiving
- 50,000 babies per year are conceived with use the use of ART - Assisted Reproductive Technology in the U.S.
Among the more that 7 million people in the U.S. who are affected by infertility (one in 7 or around 14%), the basis for the problem is evenly spread. Surrogacy statistic show one third of the problem stemming from the woman, one third from the man and the remaining third from some combination of both. With the advancement of in vitro fertilization in the last 15 years, infertile intended parent's options have increased dramatically. For those who want to retain the possibility of having a biological child and for whom traditional IVF has not worked, commercial surrogacy remains the best option.
Surrogacy statistics show that the number of gestational surrogacy procedures has increased in recent years, and the results show that the benefits of surrogacy are generally quite good. Traditional surrogacy can involve the use of the surrogates own egg, a donor egg or the biological mother's egg and donor sperm or of course the biological father's sperm.
Gestational surrogacy doesn't involve the use of the gestational mother's eggs so there is no biological connection to the baby she carries. There are no surrogacy statistics that show a difference in the results between the two methods, it all depends on the specific infertility issues or the age of the person who is furnishing the eggs. See our article on cost of egg donation IVF surrogacy.
The one thing we do know for sure is that, like most infertility treatments, there is no way to guarantee a 100% chance of getting pregnant through surrogacy. Results will vary depending on a number of factors, including the reason for infertility (like a hysterectomy or uterine cancer) and the age of the mother. A disturbing article back on June 20, 2005 in BBC NEWS written by Micelle Roberts was titled, 'Infertility time bomb' warning. In the article professor Bill Ledger of Sheffield University in England warned that infertility could rise to one out of three (33%) in Europe. It seems Chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease that carries risk of infertility has doubled over the last decade. In addition, six percent of girls under the age of 19 are classified as obese. Professor Ledger added, "The obese child is almost certain to become an obese adult. Many women who are overweight will not ovulate as efficiently," Regarding women putting off having a family. He said, "Women are simply not as fertile after 35." See full article below.
On the positive side of the spectrum, surrogacy statistics also show the the innovations in technology have helped to improve the chances of infertile couples producing a healthy child. The use of commercial surrogacy agencies can increase those chances by carefully screening potential women wanting to become a surrogate mother and matching them up with the right infertile intended parents. And we are seeing more and more same sex parenting with lesbian surrogacy and gay men both wanting children of their own.
One of the innovations is the ability to harvest and preserve multiple eggs at one time. This allows infertile couples the ability to try for a successful pregnancy several times if need be. About 25-50% of couples undergoing fertility treatment will have extra embryos stored in liquid nitrogen for future attempts at surrogate pregnancy. When choosing a fertility clinic, it is very important that couples investigate each ones history closely. Specifically, request birth statistics for each fertility clinic so that you can be sure to choose one that has a good success rate and which you feel comfortable with. All fertility clinics should be willing to turn over these surrogacy statistics when requested.
Infertility should not mean a permanent roadblock to having a family. With modern science, the possibilities for conceiving are good. Don't loose heart if you run up against infertility problems. When you do your surrogate motherhood research into surrogate mother information and surrogate parenting you will find that the surrogacy statistics numbers are far more hopeful than you might think. Now days, even the sex of the child can actually be chosen.

"Infertility time bomb - warning"
Finally, surrogacy statistics are constantly in flux being driven by an alarming increase in the human infertility rate. In an article by Michelle Roberts, a BBC News health reporter, "Infertility time bomb - warning." Professor Bill Ledger from Sheffield University in England warned that infertility could rise to one out of three (33%). Causes?: Sex infections and obesity. Chlamydia, a (STD) sexually transmitted disease that carries risk of infertility, has doubled over the last decade. In addition, six percent of girls under the age of 19 are classified as obese. Professor Ledger added: "The obese child is almost certain to become an obese adult. Many women who are overweight will not ovulate as efficiently." Also, regarding women putting off having a family he said: "Women are simply not as fertile after 35." See full article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4112450.stm
The real revolution is in IVF technology.
Success with IVF cycles can now reach 70 to 90% pregnancy rates up from 40% just a few years ago. In addition, IVF miscarriage rates have dropped by 85%. Many clinics use a single sperm that is injected directly into the egg. No more Petri dish.
Most fertility clinics can now test the embryo for a range of genetic diseases before implantation. You can even pick the sex of your child.
