Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, both Australian, just had a baby by gestational surrogate mother in January of 2011, which sparked renewed interest in surrogacy encircling the globe. More and more people are being educated about surrogacy.
Now, under newly enacted legislation, “compensated” surrogacy in England, Canada and Australia has become illegal. Altruistic or free surrogacy is still allowed. Do not pay anyone for surrogacy or sperm and egg donation in these countries. New laws on surrogacy in Australia were passed in November of 2010 and became law in March of 2011. Nicole and Keith would now be considered criminals. Why?
The NSW (New South Wales) Surrogacy Act has criminal implications for those paying for surrogacy related services inside of Australia or abroad. The law carries up to two years in jail and $110,000 in fines. It is discouraging to see socialism and these countries apparent lack of money blocking the 15 to 20 percent of the world’s population on average that are infertile and struggling to have children or are of gay lesbian persuasion and would like to be intended parents. Why not let the free market govern and pay for surrogacy?
The new law against surrogacy in Australia follows the Canadian government 2004 Human Reproduction act that has a whopping $500,000 fine and 10 years in jail. Many in Canada say their Parliament usurped individual Canadian Province (think state) right in the matter. This kind of “Big Brother” government control may cause people to lie about their children’s birth or their sexual orientation in order to have a precious child.
Are these countries socialized medicine programs too broke to take on any extra cost?
On a more promising note, a Family Court outside of Melbourne, Australia recently granted a goy couple complete parental rights of their surrogate twins. Justice Paul Cronin said, “An affair of code, the term parent tends to suggest some biological connection, how about parental responsibility. In this case the children do not have the benefit of a mother; however, they have the fortune of having two fathers.”
With 15 percent of the world infertile and anther some 10 percent LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender), these countries are making some 25 percent of their population potential criminals. Is their socialized medicines system so broke they can’t afford a few babies born by surrogacy to their taxpaying citizens? Are their lawmakers and politicians so self righteous they thing they know what is best for all? Do they already have their own progeny, but no one else can? Human beings have a deep-seated need to procreate and have children in their life and to continue their bloodlines even if the KNA only comes from one parent.
Prohibition does not work – for surrogacy, drugs or booze. Warning! Surrogacy in Australia, Canada and England has turned dangerous. Do not pay any money for surrogacy or sperm and egg donation!
